Michelle Renee Hiatt is an award-winning Quilter, Designer and National Instructor.

Michelle has been sewing since before she can remember, and fell in love with quilting over 20 years ago.  

Michelle Renee is a certified Professional Process Expert (LSSMBB); she uses her process improvement techniques and applies them to her quilting and teaching others how to simplify their piecing while improving the quality of their quilt making.  Michelle Renee teaches throughout the United States at National Quilt Shows and Retreats!

Michelle Renee is the designer for her own pattern line Sew On The Go and her designs have appeared in several international Quilting Magazines. Additionally, she is a Certified Instructor for Studio 180 Design and many of her patterns have been published in their Modern 180 pattern line.

WHEN LIFE GIVE YOU FAT QUARTERS, MAKE A QUILT

Michelle reflects on how she fell in love with quilting and how it has been there through life’s peaks and valleys, providing her peace and therapy when she has needed it most. 

Additionally, Michelle describes how she got into designing quilts and how you can go about changing fabric and color placement to make quilts your own. Michelle shows numerous alternate versions of quilts. She explains how she went about changing color placement and values, to change the feel of a quilt, and how you can do it too!

FOUR HOUR WORKSHOP

With some basic preparation and rotary cutting in advance as outlined in the supply list, students will learn one technique and be able to construct at least one or two blocks in class and leave with the confidence and expertise necessary to complete the quilt at home. 

SIX HOUR WORKSHOP

With some basic preparation and rotary cutting in advance as outlined in the supply list, students will learn the two-three techniques and be able to construct at least one or two blocks in class and leave with the confidence and expertise necessary to complete the quilt at home 

MULTI-DAY WORKSHOP

With some preparation as outlined in the supply list before class, students will learn the technique and have ample time to construct blocks and piece a major portion or possibly the entire quilt top during the workshop. 

Workshop Options

Sparkle

Length: Full Day Class (ideally 2 days recommended- 10 hours instruction minimum)

Quilt Size: Three sizes (Throw, Twin, or Queen)

Description:

Michelle designed this quilt combining two of her favorite quilt blocks, the Rambler and V Star (also known as the Peaky and Spike/50-40 or Fight Block).  This quilt literately sparkles!  This pattern is made using Studio 180 Design Tucker Trimmer™ I, V Block™ and the Corner Pop™ tools.   


If you collect or love Fat Quarters, this is the quilt to make. You will make fabulous usage of Fat Quarters and it is perfect for any color background. The class will include step-by-step use for three tools as well as tips on piecing and proper pressing techniques to make this quilt perfect!  Additionally, we will talk through the color selection and placement, plus ways to improve your general machine piecing. For the most sparkle, go with a high contrast between your background fabric and Fat Quarters.  Michelle used a green accent fabric throughout her chain, you could elect any color but try to use your accent color minimally within the Fat Quarters, so that it pops! 

Bloom

Length: Full Day Class 

Quilt Size: Throw, Double, Queen

Description:

Michelle was inspired by those wisps of colors here and there as blooms start to come alive after a winter’s sleep. Bloom has a whimsical layout of Spinning V Stars and Ohio Stars the two blocks come together on point, to create that blooms and greenery popping here and there. 

Whether you go with pastels or bright batiks, light or dark background, this quilt will look fabulous! Bloom comes together easily with the Studio 180 Design’s V Block™ and Square²™ (Or Large Square Squared)

Be Dazzled

Length: Full Day Class

Description:

A modern merging of Ohio Stars and Shaded Nine-Patch comes together to dazzle!  Michelle designed this great stash buster to utilize those fat quarter, half yards and yard cuts you have been collecting. 

Whether you go with a solid background to keep this cool and modern, or you go with a small print to make this more traditional, you will have tons of fun putting this quilt together!  Be Dazzled comes together easily with the Studio 180 Design’s Tucker Trimmer™ and Tucker Trimmer II²™.

The class will include step-by-step use for two tools, as well as this exciting shaded 9-patch technique.  As always, tips on piecing and proper pressing techniques to make this quilt perfect!  Additionally, we will talk through the color selection and placement, plus ways to improve your general machine piecing.


Jenn's Journey

Length: Full Day Class

Description:

Snail’s Trail quilts are amongst those bucket list quilts, but wait no longer, this quilt uses Deb Tucker’s Studio 180 Design’s latest tool the large Square Squared and the Diamond Rects.   No paper piecing! 

 

Michelle design this modern play on Snail’s Trail quilt layout in honor of a longtime friendship, both Michelle and Jenn love the positive and negative aspects of this design.  Michelle’s twin size design makes excellent use of those 1-yard fabric cuts you have been collecting.  


 It comes together with ease using Studio 180 Design’s Diamond Rects and Large Square Squared. The class will include step-by-step use for both tools, as well as tips on piecing and proper pressing techniques to make this quilt perfect!  Additionally, we will talk through the appropriate border prep and application and ways to improve your general machine piecing.  You will complete this journey with ease..

Calm Seas

Length: Full Day Class

Quilt Size: Three sizes (Throw, Double, or King)

Description:

Storm at Sea quilts are amongst those bucket list quilts, but wait no longer, this quilt uses Deb Tucker’s Studio 180 Design’s latest tool the large Square Squared, Diamond Rects, and V Block.   No paper piecing!


Michelle’s design puts a modern spin on the typical Storm at Seas quilt layout.  Michelle used 12 graduating colors which gives it that calm smooth feeling.  This quilt works great with Solid, Tone on Tone or Batiks fabric.  Pattern includes 3 size options (Throw, Twin, King) and you will be amazed how easily this quilt comes together with the right tools.


Learn how to use Deb Tucker's latest Large Square Squared™, Diamond Rects™, and  V Block™ as you make this fabulous quilt. Lightning

Length: Full Day

Quilt Size: Three Sizes (Wall, Throw, and Full)

Description:

Michelle designed Lightning, it was featured in Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting, July 2016.  Michelle’s design puts a fun spin on Lemoyne Stars by creating electrifying Lightning design.

 

This quilt pattern is now available as a standalone pattern and offered in 3 Quilt Sizes (Wall, Throw, and Double).  Each size is made with the same number of units, just in 3 different size units (6in, 9in, or 12in)

 

You will learn to master 2 different types of Lemoyne Stars; Lemoynes as Triangles and Banded Lemoynes Star. This quilt would be fabulous with a dark background, or even a fabulous print in place of the Turquoise Triangles. You’ll master two techniques using the Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star!  It's Electrifying!

In Flight

Length: 4 hours or Full Day

Quilt Size: Four sizes (Baby, Throw, Double, or King)


Description:

Michelle designed this fun, quick and easy quilt that can be made with scraps, fat quarters, yardage, etc… you pick! The pattern offers 4 sizes and 4 settingoptions. All sizes are made with the same number of blocks and units, the size of the flying geese units determines the size of the quilt. Michelle chose a largefloral print for her stars and tone on tone for her Flight block, however you can use the same fabrics, different fabrics, or scraps! In Flight comes together easily with the Studio 180 Design’s Wing Clipper I™ tool.

Amusement

Length: Multi Day (2 days recommended- 10 hours instruction minimum)

Quilt Size: Three Sizes; Twin, Throw and Large Twin

Description:

Michelle designed this quilt for Modern 180, Studio 180 Design’s Modern Pattern line.  Amusement is a fun and quirky quilt inspired by the Ferris Wheels found on the Amusement Piers, in New Jersey, where Michelle grew up. This pattern is made using Studio 180 Design's Tucker Trimmer® I, Wing Clipper® I and the Corner Pop® tools.  Make this fabulous design without paper piecing!


You will use yardage for the background and accent (green), and for each Ferris Wheel you will use 3 values of one color. So, for example, if you decide to use red for one block, you’ll need a light red, a medium red, and a dark red. It’s up to you to decide how many different color Ferris Wheels you have in your quilt.  Pattern offers Wall (4 Blocks), Throw (9 Blocks) and Twin (12 Blocks) sizes.


The class will include step-by-step use for all three tools, as well as additional examples of how to use the Studio 180 Tools to make your quilting life easier.  Plus, tons of tips on matching points, squaring up your blocks and general machine piecing tips and tricks.

Diamonds in the Sky

Length: (1) Full Day Class

Quilt Size: 58" x 70" 

Description:

Michelle designed this dazzling quilt for Modern 180 Designs.  In Diamonds in the Sky, you'll create brilliant 4 piece Diamonds that really radiate, plus a beautiful alternating block which gives this quilt dimension and allows it to shine!  Diamonds in the Sky uses Fat Quarters, but you could also use 6” strips or scraps and this quilt would be dynamite.  If you want that high contrast look, use assorted bright fabrics for your Diamonds and a dark or light


Learn how to use Deb Tucker’s Corner Beam™ as you make this fun quilt. The class will include step-by-step use of the Corner Beam, as well as tips on matching points, piecing on-point quilts, strip piecing techniques, and general machine piecing hints and tips.  It shimmers!

Finley's Fence

Length: Full Day Class

Quilt Size: Multiple Sizes – Baby 54”x54”, Throw 66”x78”, or Twin 78”x102” 

Description:

Michelle designed this interlocking quilt for Modern 180 Designs.  Finley’s Fence features playful rings of interwoven colors, made up of Fat Quarters, to create this modern play on an Irish Links quilt.   This playful quilt comes together easily with the help of Studio 180 Design’s Corner Pop™.  Michelle’s inventive use of the Corner Pop™ makes this otherwise difficult angled/bias unit actually tons of fun to make.


The pattern list suggestions for the number of fat quarters, however the more fabric the better, 6 ½” strips of scrappy would work too! 


The class will include step-by-step use of the Corner Pop™, as well as additional examples of how to use the Corner Pop™ to make your quilting life easier.  Plus, tons of tips on matching points, squaring up your blocks and general machine piecing tips and tricks.

Hunter Star

Length: Full Day

Quilt Size: 58" x 72"

Description: Learn how to use Deb Tucker’s Rapid Fire Hunter Star Ruler and make one of over 40 different Hunter Star layouts by just playing with tone, color and placement.  This class will push your creative side.  You can use Deb Tucker’s new book for inspiration or just play.  Michelle will cover some basics in color theory; learn methods for using color with confidence through audition, color wheel and other group color adventures. You will leave this workshop with a deeper understanding of the role of color in your quilts and with a renewed excitement about quilting.  For this class, you will only need 8 Dark and 8 Light Fabrics.  Feel free to bring more, to play and audition.  Additionally, you will get tips on the best way to measure and piece your borders.

Lemoyne Star

Length: 4 Hours - Full Day

Quilt Size: 37” x 37”

Description:

Get ready for a great new method for constructing traditional Lemoyne Star blocks. You'll be using strip piecing techniques, over-sizing units for easy trim down and no "Y" seams. Deb Tucker’s Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star tool is designed to give you the choice of 10 different size blocks that range from 3" finished to 12"finished. Our class project is a sampler of all the available size options so you'll get a chance to try them all and end up with a marvelous wall quilt.
